When he joined the Air Force at 18 years of age, O'Neill proved himself to be an exceptional and gifted airman and was later assigned to a special forces unit. He resigned from service when his son Charlie died by accidentally shooting himself with O'Neill's gun. O'Neill never recovered from the loss, which drove his wife to eventually leave him. O'Neill was recalled by his former commanding officer to go through the Stargate precisely because of his willingness to die. Instead, the mission gave him a new desire to live.

Anderson and his producing partner, Michael Greenburg, operating under their production company banner, Gekko Film Corp., Executive Produced the two MacGyver television movies that followed, Trail to Doomsday and Lost Treasure of Atlantis. |
| Micheal Shanks (as Dr. Daniel Jackson) |
A veteran of the first Stargate exploratory team from the movie Stargate, Dr. Daniel Jackson is an anthropologist and linguist and an expert in ancient and current cultures; he speaks over 20 languages, including ancient Egyptian. He had originally been contracted by the military to decipher a mysterious hieroglyphic cartouche. His subsequent translation of it allowed the Earth's first discovered Stargate to be opened. As a member of SG-1, Dr. Jackson's humanistic approach was often in conflict with Colonel Jack O'Neill's militaristic style.
Some saw Dr. Jackson as a soft, brainy, clumsy scientist who carried a wide-eyed enthusiasm with him through every mission, but he earned the heartfelt trust and respect of O'Neill and all the others — never more so than after sacrificing his worldly existence to save millions of lives in Kelowna, a country on the planet designated P9Y-4C3. He ascended to a higher spiritual plane in place of death. Even before this, he had been considered like a deity to the people of Abydos, the planet on which he'd chosen to stay following that first SG mission.

| Amanda Tapping (as Major/Dr. Samantha Carter - Now Colonel and rarely seen) |

When the plug is pulled on her gate research project and she is transferred to another base, she continues her research in private. She is able to resume her obsession with the gate when the SG-1 team is assembled. Like the other team members, Samantha is unattached socially. Major Carter is fiercely loyal to the SGC and not only brings her extensive scientific knowledge to the program but also her military training.

There is a strong symbiotic relationship between the larva and the Jaffa as the symbiote guarantees its host immunity to diseases. For this reason, Jaffa live to be very old. Once a member of the Apophis's notorious Serpent Guards, Teal'c left his family and culture behind when he joined the SG-1 team. His main reason for joining is to defeat the Goa'uld and to try to set at least some of his misdeeds straight. Teal'c now no longer has a Goa'uld inside him and is sustained by a new drug.
